I'm purple with Apoplexy with Starmer, green with envy of Trump, red with anger at Reeves, blue with despair at Starmer's lack of anything resembling a sentient human being and the black dog is upon me at the thought of 5 more years of this dystopia.
Rainbows belong in the sky.
Proud, prosperous and free compared to depressed, broke and locked up!
Mark: Great essay, but can you insert a space between paragraphs - makes it easier to read through the whole piece when reading on a phone. Cheers Michael
Thanks Michael. When you get a chance, please check my changes. I’ve put some paragraph breaks in. But if you need bigger paragraph breaks (with more space) please let me know! Fantastic to get the feedback 🙏
Before we get too carried away with envying the election of Trump we should remember that the UK is a totally different place to the US. We actually like having a Heath Service - it's a national institution (even religion). We also like the welfare state and, let's face it, generally don't like working too hard. If we tried to become more like the US we wouldn't like it much.
Some are forgetting that this is a rare non-consecutive 2nd term, so actually Trump only has 3.5 years to do stuff in. His last 6 months will need to be all abut supporting a new candidate. The speculation about that will begin in late 2027 in fact. Trump won't like that of course. My guess is it'll be someone from the more normal side of the Republican Party like Ron Desantis or Nicky Hayley. Kemi apparently knows this side of the Party (certainly Desantis) and is liked by them. So Farage's supposed big advantage of knowing people in this administration will be short lived. And anyway Trump (and Musk) might actually become pretty unpopular in the UK through eg Tariffs etc.
You've brilliantly captured the sentiment shared by many Brits. Your analogies are pure comedy gold—from the envious restaurant-goer to the 'ugly girlfriend' comparison—and I'm genuinely in awe of your talent. You somehow manage to distill serious topics into razor-sharp commentary that both informs and entertains. It's heartening to see your wit remains as sharp and delightful as ever.

You choose.

I'm hoping Trump will annex the British Isles maybe even His Majesty 's colonies of Canada. New Zealand & Australia.
So right. Not "far" right, sane right. Mark Dolan for Prime Minister. Or at least a highly regarded government policy adviser. Please.
